Originally a place of residence and work for merchants and their families, townhouse homes had a small frontage while their interior stretched far and back.

'Tsuboniwa' Garden
'Tsuboniwa'Garden A'tsuboniwa' garden was essential for traditional townhouse homes. As houses in Kyoto were built close together (often sharing a wall or even a roof), the 'tsuboniwa' garden played an essential role in providing a fresh breeze & natural light through the house. Lounge around on the 'engawa' wood deck, and admire the garden throughout the 4 seasons.

Now transformed into a dining room, this space was known formerly as a 'doma'. Traditionally, the 'doma' was an area with earthen floors, and was used as casual space to speak with neighbors, a garage & even a kitchen. Discover traditional Japanese art pieces throughout this townhouse. Kyoto is known as the birthplace of 'Kiyomizu-yaki' pottery & porcelain. Dating back to the 16th period, skilled artisans worked in the area just below Kiyomizu Temple to create pottery decorated with colorful pigments.
