The house sits in a historic neighbourhood shaped by Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, home to one of the largest wooden structures in the world. Once home to kimono merchants and skilled craftspeople, the traditional streetscape surrounding the property is still preserved today as part of Kyoto's Historic Scenic Preservation Districts.
The latticed wooden façade opens into a spacious living and dining area. A small tsuboniwa garden brings natural light and seasonal change into the home, and the bathroom features a deep soaking tub inspired by the traditional goemon-buro. The tatami room's fusuma sliding doors are decorated with karakami paper, a craft tradition this neighbourhood has carried for generations.
Upstairs, a Western-style bedroom with a double bed and desk sits beside a light-filled Japanese-style room. With three bedrooms in total, Orie is well suited to families and small groups looking for the privacy of their own townhouse with easy access to central Kyoto.
